Carole Ward Downes passed away peacefully on Dec. 21, 2025. A native of Paint Lick, Kentucky, she remained closely tied to her roots and the values that shaped her life. She cared for her family through the work of everyday life—cooking and baking for daily meals and special occasions, tending her garden, and sewing everything from formal gowns to mending jeans. She managed the family farms and handled their business with care and diligence. A natural teacher, she shared practical skills and wisdom that endure. When she had a moment to spare, she enjoyed following the University of Kentucky basketball team with colorful and spirited commentary. She will be remembered for her humor, honesty, curiosity, and generosity. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Helen Ward, and her brother, Harold "Coby" Ward. She is survived by her sister, Sarah Ward Chew (Tim Chew); her daughter, Ellen Downes McDougall (Glenn McDougall); her grandsons, Graeme and Donald McDougall; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Services will be held at the family burial plot in Old Paint Lick Cemetery at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 2, 2026, followed by a reception at Boone Tavern from 3–5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Old Paint Lick Cemetery, P.O.
