Obituary

Rose Day Sparks, 93, of Lancaster, passed away Saturday, October 24, 2020 at Landmark of Lancaster. Born Monday, March 28, 1927 in Leslie County, she was a daughter of the late Willie & Martha Wells Day. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband Elisha Sparks, brothers; Chester Day, Oscar Day, sister; Molly Helton and one grandchild, David Allen. Rose began her thirty- year teaching career at the age of seventeen, at Hullett, a two-room school. She took an eight-year break to have her three children. Then, she returned to the classroom at Gabbard, a one-room school. At the same time, she returned to Eastern and completed her degree by attending classes during the summers and Saturdays. She left Gabbard and taught fifth and sixth grades at Wren's View. After the schools were consolidated , she taught fourth grade at Lancaster Elementary for eighteen years and then retired, having taught thirty years. While raising a family, teaching, and completing her college degree, she also helped on the farms. She loved her church, Leavell Green Christian Church, where she was a longtime member, and her family and was a special mammaw to her grandchildren. She will be missed by all who knew her. Her survivors include son; Willis (Alice) Sparks, of Paint Lick, daughters; Wanda Allen, of Lancaster, Carolyn (the late James) Rankin, of Stanford, brother; George Day, of Crab Orchard, six grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, October 26, 2020 at Ramsey-Young Funeral Home with Bro. Harvey Spry officiating and burial following at Lancaster Cemetery. Pallbearers include; Michael Rankin, Kenny Allen, Russell Reynolds, Isaac Sparks, Elisha Henderson, Rodney Sparks & Keaton Robinson. Honorary pallbearers include; Garrett Allen, Matthew Sparks, Justin Rankin, Julianna Reynolds, Amber Rankin, Lexie Johnson, Clara Allen, Molly Allen, Sarah Freeman, Lisa Reynolds, Karen Henderson & Jacob Reynolds. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until service time at Ramsey-Young Funeral Home. Friends and family may share memories and leave condolences on her tribute wall at www.ramsey-young.com.
