Oscar Lee Bailey, 75, passed away Saturday, April 30, 2022 in Richmond, Kentucky. He was the first of four sons born to the late Jack C. & Betsy Ballard Bailey, on Thursday, March 27, 1947. Oscar was a member of the first graduating class of Garrard County High School in 1965.
A graduate of Eastern Kentucky University, Oscar began His 29 year elementary school teaching career at Julia R. Ewan in the Fayette Co. School System, retiring from that school. Following retirement, he enjoyed traveling; concerts and raising exotic birds and fancy breed chickens in which he received numerous awards for best of show in Kentucky & surrounding states. Oscar grew up being very active in Lancaster Christian Church, serving as church organist while also attending college. Upon retirement and moving to Madison County, Oscar moved his membership to the historic Mt. Zion Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Richmond where he served as a deacon, former choir member and an integral part of the Mt. Zion Christian Church family.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Thomas & Florine Harrison Ballard, step-grandmother, Tressie R. Ballard, and paternal grandparents, Herbert Lee and Nellie Cox Bailey, as well as a host of beloved aunts and uncles from the Bailey and Ballard families.
Oscar is survived by his three brothers, Donald W. Bailey (Jeannie), Jack C. Bailey II (Norm), Bruce A. Bailey (Linda), two nieces, Tiffany Bailey Wilson (Rob), Sara Don Bailey, one nephew, Michael R. Bailey (Kayla), three great-nephews, Jude & Beck Wilson and Kaden Noakes, as well as two great-nieces, McKenzie & Maelyn Bailey.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, May 11, 2022 at Lancaster Christian Church with Sara Don Bailey & Tiffany Bailey Wilson officiating. Burial will follow at Lancaster Cemetery with Minister Roger Hurt from Mt. Zion Christian Church officiating. Pallbearers include Michael R. Bailey, Robert Wilson, Mark Baker, Rick Anderson, Danny Waters, & William Kirby Teater. Honorary pallbearers include Sheila Kirby Miller, Patty Pope, The Harrison Families, Doan Adkison, LaDonna Harp, Jimmy Sanders, Donna Volpe, Eleanor Sims, Nancy Ballard McQuerry, John Ballard, Fran Ballard Christian, Carla Baker Park, Claudia Jones Blevins, Kelsey Jones, Kendall Bailey, & the members of Mt. Zion Christian Church. Visitation will be held from 4:00-8:00 PM on Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at Lancaster Christian Church. The family requests anyone attending the visitation & funeral services to please wear appropriate facial coverings.
