Paul J. Sides, Jr.

Dr. Paul J. Sides, Jr, 79, passed away on Saturday, May 16 at his home in Kingsport, TN after an extended illness.  He was born on August 18, 1946 in Louisville, Kentucky to the late Dr. Paul and Vivian Sides.  As a young boy while his father was in the Navy, he lived in Martha's Vineyard and New Orleans before his parents settled in Lancaster, Kentucky where he was raised.

He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Centre College in Danville, KY where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity and went on to earn a PhD and M.D. from Duke University, Durham, North Carolina in 1974. Upon completion of his residency at Duke, he relocated from North Carolina to Tennessee and began practicing Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Holston Valley Hospital in 1978 until his retirement in 2011.

He was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church in Kingsport. He enjoyed classical music and was a lover of languages, having studied German, Spanish, Latin and more recently French.  He was an avid fan of both Duke football and basketball.

Dr. Sides was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Paul Jesse Sides Sr., his mother Vivian Carter Sides and his son-in-law Nicholas Marks.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 58 years, Patsy Spoonamore Sides whom he married on June 2, 1968, the same day he graduated from Centre College and moved to North Carolina.  It was quite an eventful day - Dr. Sides was always efficient.

He is also survived by his children Amy Sides Marks (Nashville), Jonathan (Katherine) Sides (Knoxville); his grandchildren Caitlyn Marks and Silas Marks; sister Linda (Bill) Sides Struckhoff (Columbia, Missouri); sister Marion (Jim) Sides Vruggink (West LaFayette, Indiana) and brother Tom (Laurie) Sides of Beckley, West Virginia and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lancaster Methodist Church (Lancaster, KY), or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 23 at 2:00 p.m. at Lancaster Cemetery.  Ramsey-Young Funeral Home in Lancaster, Kentucky will be in charge of arrangements.
