Mary Ruth Hammons, 77, of Paint Lick, KY, passed away peacefully on the morning of May 1st, 2026, after a hard-fought battle with breast cancer. She was born July 6th, 1948, in Jackson, KY, to the late Charles Sr. and Georgia Lawson Overbee. Ruth spent her life as a dedicated educator and caretaker for her family. In her free time, she enjoyed sewing and baking. She was a long-time member of Hyattsville Baptist Church and a loving and caring soul to everyone she met. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Sr. and Georgia Lawson Overbee; her brother, Charles Overbee Jr.; and her sister, Anna Faye Stanley. She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Bob Hammons. She is also survived by her stepdaughter, Gina Hammons Sparks (Rodney) of Paint Lick, KY; two grandchildren, Isaac Sparks (Rachel) of Danville, Kentucky, and Matthew Sparks of Paint Lick, KY; and two great-grandchildren, Elam Sparks and Elizabeth Sparks. Ruth is also survived by her siblings, Betty Jo Overbee and Deborah Sue Overbee of Jackson, KY; Dean Caudill; Margie Angel (Bill); and John Overbee (Gwen), all of Stanton, KY. In addition, she leaves behind several nieces and nephews, including two special nieces, Lynn Walsh (Jeff) and Lisa Caudill, and a special nephew, Doug Caudill. Services will be held on May 9th, 2026, at Ramsey-Young Funeral Home in Lancaster, KY. Visitation will be held at 10:00 AM, and funeral services at 11:00 AM. Brother Everett Priddy will be officiating the services. A graveside service will follow at Manse Cemetery in Paint Lick, KY. Pallbearers will be Isaac Sparks, Matthew Sparks, Elam Sparks, Rodney Sparks, Doug Caudill, Ryan Caudill, and Jeff Walsh. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations in Ruth’s honor to the American Cancer Society. The family also encourages regular breast cancer screenings for prevention and early detection.
