Vernon Montgomery Obituary

Vernon Clay Montgomery passed to his heavenly home on January 1, 2016. He was born April 22, 1924 in Mt. Hebron, Garrard County, Kentucky to Marion Lucas Montgomery and Nannie Coulter Montgomery. He was a lifelong farmer in Jessamine and Garrard Counties. He was a member of the Garrard and Jessamine County Beef Associations. He was a faithful member of Forks of Dix River Baptist Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher, deacon, trustee, and moderator. Vernon was the first person from Garrard County to earn the American Farmers' Degree from the Future Farmers of American in 1943. During World War II Vernon was a rifle marksman in the US Army serving in the 180th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion, 45th Division and served in Italy, France, Germany, and England. He received a Purple Heart from injuries received in action at the Battle of Rhineland on January 7, 1945. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Canter Montgomery, his son Darby Montgomery (Trish) of Lancaster, his sister, Ida Ruth Montgomery Canter of Jessamine County, brother in law, Buddy Carter of Jessamine County, sister in law, Faye Canter of Lexington, grandchildren; Stephanie Hodge (John), Todd Montgomery (Kelly), and Kevin Montgomery (Megan), great grandchildren; Thad Hulett, Ali Hulett, Garrison Montgomery, Elle Montgomery, Isabella Montgomery, Isaac Clay Montgomery and a special caretaker, Verna Mae Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Daryl Edwin Montgomery, his brother, Charles Montgomery, sisters, Lucille Montgomery Noe, and Gladys Montgomery Pollard. Funeral services will be conducted by Bro. Bill Rhodus and Bro. Cole Caven at Ramsey-Young Funeral Home in Lancaster on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at 1:00 pm. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Nicholasville. Military Rites will be performed by the Caswell Saufley Post #18 of the American Legion. Visitation will be from 5 - 8pm Monday, January 4, 2016 at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be nephews, M. L. Noe, Wayne Montgomery, Glen Montgomery, Ronald Dale Shearer, Jerry Carter, David Canter, Eric Canter, John Canter, and Brad Teater. Honorary pallbearers will be Paul Ballard, George Jackson, Don Hawkins, Raymond Doolin Jr., Gary Conder, W C Brogli, Joe Brogli, Woodie Leavell, and Rodney Montgomery. There are numerous Sunday School teachers, deacons, trustees, and members of Forks of Dix River Baptist Church that he shared very special friendships with through the years and have meant so much to Vernon, Virginia, and the family.
